Land Rover and Audi bring European elegance and sophistication to their entries in the larger SUV segment. Building upon their deep experience marrying practicality with posh features, cars like the Land Rover Discovery and Audi Q7 are impressive SUVs boasting technological advancements and other thoughtful touches that merit a closer look.

The Discovery has been in production since 1989, backed by Land Rover's long and illustrious history building the first SUVs. The Discovery performs equally well on rocky terrain or smooth highways, underpinned by a standard 3.0-liter V-6 engine good for 330 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. An optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 has a lower 254 horsepower but an increased 443 pound-feet of torque.

The Q7 is powered by a standard four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engine that only attains 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. An optional six-cylinder 3.0 TFSI engine tops out at 329 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.

Both the Discovery and Q7 count as standard many of the amenities you have come to expect from today's luxury vehicles, such as leather seats, moonroof, and power driver's seat. Audi further offers standard heated front seats (optional for the back seat) and an optional luxury package that drapes the armrests in leather and equips the front seats with ventilation and massage capability.

Land Rover offers luxurious interior options such as heated rear seats, keyless entry, and three-zone climate control. The optional Intelligent Seating option really raises the bar, allowing the driver to control the second- and third-row seating configurations from the front touch screen or, incredibly, right from your phone. Gone are the frustrating days of juggling bags of groceries while you try to manually fold down the back seat.

The Audi comes in at nearly 200 inches while the Land Rover's length is about 4 inches shorter. The interior measurements are comparable, with Land Rover's front headroom an inch higher than the Audi at 39.4 inches

Aside from carrying seven passengers comfortably, the Discovery offers a more gracious cargo capacity. Behind the second row of seating, the Discovery offers 43.5 cubic feet compared to the Q7's 37.5 cubic feet. Folding down both the second and third rows of seating reveals 88.3 cubic feet of storage whereas the Q7 provides 71.6 cubic feet.

Audi's new vehicle limited warranty covers the Q7 for four years/50,000 miles. Audi's 24-hour roadside assistance program is also available during this time. A 12-year corrosion protection warranty is also included.

Similarly, Land Rover offers a four-year/50,000-mile warranty and corrosion protection for six years and unlimited mileage. Vehicles under warranty can avail themselves of Land Rover's 24-hour roadside assistance program, including trip-interruption expense benefits if a warranty-related issue arises when you are more than 50 miles from home. Finally, new Land Rover owners are eligible for a free off-road driving lesson with a knowledgeable Land Rover instructor.

Cars like Land Rover and Audi have tremendous pedigrees built on years of producing sophisticated, reliable, and beautiful vehicles. However, the Discovery has an advantage over the Audi with its more robust engine options, generous interior storage, and innovative amenities.
